Career opportunity for a production geology professional to lead the geology department of an international mining operation for a strong mid-tier precious metals mining company.

Position Scope:

As a key member of the management team, the Chief Geologist will manage all aspects of underground production geology and exploration for the mine. The incumbent will work closely with the production and processing departments to ensure efficient and cost effective mining and processing, and will provide leadership and direction to a team of geologists and technical professionals in meeting geology needs of the operations group.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage underground resources, and ensure maximum economical recovery of reserve.
  • In conjunction with reserve modeler, produce monthly, quarterly and annual mill to production, and production to reserve model reconciliations.
  • Manage underground exploration drilling and exploration development programs.
  • Evaluate and identify exploration targets to increase reserve and mine life.
  • Work closely with Corporate Exploration group to coordinate resources for underground and surface drilling programs.
  • Oversee management of the site core logging and sampling facilities and ensure that QA/QC is maintained to best practices and company standards.
  • Manage Underground Geology department staff, perform employee evaluations, and ensure that employees are receiving appropriate development opportunities.
  • Reports directly to the Site General Manager, and on a dotted line basis to the Senior Vice-President, Technical Services

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate degree in Geology required
  • Professional designation, or in process of obtaining
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in an operating mine environment required
  • Underground grade control experience in gold/silver vein deposits required
  • Knowledge of resource estimation methods required
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
  • Must be able to effectively present concepts and proposals to all personnel from senior management to production employees
  • Team builder with strong interpersonal skills; Strong coaching, mentoring, and leadership development skills
  • Self starter with strong decision-making ability; Unwavering focus on safety; Team player with ability to contribute at strategic level
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and strong knowledge of Vulcan or similar mining software, along with database software such as Acquire and SQL
  • Prior experience operating in Latin America or an overseas assignment preferred
  • Spanish language capabilities an asset
